about the projectsWELCOME

Welcome and thank you for coming to the project website for the Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge Replacement Project. The project's design is now complete and construction is ongoing. Between summer 2012 and early 2016, a design/build team led by The Middlesex Corporation under the direction of MassDOT, will replace the current Burns Bridge with a new steel deck arch bridge. Construction of the new bridge will cost approximately $89 million.

The replacement of the Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge is a signature initiative of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' historic Accelerated Bridge Program. The replacement bridge will carry Route 9, known as Belmont Street in Worcester and Boston Turnpike in Shrewsbury, over Lake Quinsigamond. The project team invites you to look through the website, learn more about the project, browse the materials developed to support the public involvement process, or ask the project's public involvement specialist a question.

The View Ahead: Overnight on Wednesday, June 17th, 2015 east and westbound traffic will be shifted from the southern half of the Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge to the recently completed northern half. All lanes currently available will be maintained as will access to abutting businesses. This temporary shift will launch an approximately four week period during which pedestrian traffic will be rerouted to the sidewalk on the northern half of the bridge. During this time the sidewalk on the bridge's sourthern half will be closed while it is finalized to carry eastbound traffic. At the end of the four weeks, the bridge will achieve its final traffic configuration with thee eastbound lanes, three westbound lanes, and sidewalks on both sides of the structure. For more information, please see our press release.

As of the week of June 15, work on the second half of the new Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge is underway. Operations over the next several weeks will focus on the southern (eastbound) half of the bridge including installation of expansion joints, completing end posts, and adjusting scuppers. The deck will be ground, waterproofed, and paved. Field painting of bridge components will continue. Off the bridge, work will include landscaping, installation of safety railings on the approaches to the bridge, and completion of the roundabout truck apron on Lake Avenue North.

Public Safety Announcement: The first of priority of MassDOT and its Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge project team is public safety.  With the ice melted and boating season underway, users are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the boating safety flyer.
