about the projectsWELCOME

Welcome and thank you for coming to the project website for the Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge Replacement Project. The project's design is now complete and construction is ongoing. Between summer 2012 and early 2016, a design/build team led by The Middlesex Corporation under the direction of MassDOT, will replace the current Burns Bridge with a new steel deck arch bridge. Construction of the new bridge will cost approximately $89 million.

The replacement of the Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge is a signature initiative of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' historic Accelerated Bridge Program. The replacement bridge will carry Route 9, known as Belmont Street in Worcester and Turnpike Road in Shrewsbury, over Lake Quinsigamond. The project team invites you to look through the website, learn more about the project, browse the materials developed to support the public involvement process, or ask the project's public involvement specialist a question.

The View Ahead: As of the week of September 8th, work on the second half of the new Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge is underway. Work over the next several weeks will include installation of reinforcing and pouring perched pier caps, installation of temporary shoring in advance of steel erection, drainage work and more.

Public Safety Announcement: The first of priority of MassDOT and its Kenneth F. Burns Memorial Bridge project team is public safety.  With summer well underway, boaters are encouraged to familiarize themselves with our boating safety flyer.
